Did you know that skipping overnight feeds is the quickest way to reduce your milk supply?
Prolactin is the hormone that signals your body to make milk and it is the highest at night and early in the morning. It is normally about 1-5 am. it is important to pump or feed at least once during this time because it signals your body to make more milk and helps you to establish a strong supply. Of corse it would be in the middle of the night when mommas are so tired and need to catch up on rest
I notice a difference in my supply if my baby sleeps through the night a few nights in a row and we skip the night feedings. If this happens I try to get up before her and pump so that I don’t miss the peak. This is really important in the first few weeks postpartum when you are trying to build your supply because skipping it can cause your prolactin levels to drop and tell your body you don’t need as much milk.
However If you’re trying to wean over night feedings would be a good place to start when you are dropping a feed.
