I’m an exclusive pumper and just these last few days my breast that has always been the one that produces more milk is now my slacker breast. I haven’t changed anything in my diet and I’m 4 1/2 months postpartum, this has never happened before. Has anyone experienced this and did production go back up in the stronger breast? I already do power pumping, supplements and increasing my fluid intake so I’m not sure what else I can do to increase my milk volume in my breast that was the main supplier.
I think it’s normal and not to be concerned about. My right side usually produces more but everyone once in a while the left will produce up to 1oz more. Sometimes it’s due to a clogged duct on one side and other times I think it just happens.
It’s totally normal for breasts to produce different amounts, but since this is a sudden change in the side that usually produces more, I’d look at milk removal first. I’d check your flange fit and pump parts (especially valves/membranes), and try breast compressions while pumping. Sometimes a subtle clog/inflammation or even a change in how well that side is being emptied can temporarily lower output.
Also, more fluids or supplements usually won’t increase supply unless you’re actually dehydrated or there’s another issue—the biggest driver is frequent, effective milk removal. If you want to encourage that breast specifically, you could add a little extra stimulation/removal on that side for a few days and see if it responds. And if the drop continues or you notice pain, redness, a lump, or other breast changes, I’d get it checked. ![]()
I have a slacker side too! It’s okay it’s normal you mentioned you do all the pumping tricks but have you attempted to pump a little longer on that side? Or only power pump that one side ? Just curious
Don’t be too worried mama ! Try lactation cookies etc
Hi mama from my experience i went through the exact same thing at that time i was also exclusively pumping with my first breastfeeding journey the breast that produced the most suddenly stopped producing i tried everything until i went to a lactation consultant and she told me it was completely normal due to a hormonal process and even the frustration of wanting to produce more was what blocked me and simply prevented me from having efficient pumping sessions after i tried milk-boosting techniques like power pumping which has worked since that moment and i am not going to lie to you it was hard to recover my production on that side but not impossible but believe me it is totally worth it so my best advice is do not stress keep staying hydrated and above all increase your pumping sessions more frequently on that side to pre-stimulate the breast so it can give you more quantity the left side that used to produce 5 to 7 ounces dropped to 2 to 3 ounces but that can change from one moment to the next now at my 19 months the left side from one moment to the next produces 5 ounces and then drops to 1 or 2 or even a few drops so you have been at this a short time little by little you will get to know your body more and see how it really works that took me a while to understand but after that the situation no longer frustrated me remember that it is also normal to have a lazy boob so take it easy and i hope this can really help you
