Mother’s Wrist is Real!

One thing I wish more new moms were warned about: “mommy wrist” is real. Postpartum wrist pain—often from lifting, feeding, burping, rocking, and holding a growing baby

—can make even small movements hurt.
If your thumb-side wrist starts aching, try to rest it when you can, use a supportive wrist/thumb brace, and lift baby with your palms and forearms rather than hooking them under the arms with your thumbs stretched out. You are not weak or doing motherhood wrong—your body is healing while doing repetitive, physically demanding work all day.
And please don’t wait until it becomes unbearable to ask for help. A doctor, physical therapist, or hand specialist can help, especially if the pain is persistent, swelling, numbness, or weakness is getting worse.
