One thing I hope this Support List doesn’t leave out is… having a “sick-day plan” for YOU.
Flu season is around the corner, and it’s something breastfeeding and pumping moms should be prepared for—not just for our babies, but for ourselves, too.
If you get sick, remember that you don’t have to be perfect. If you’re able to continue breastfeeding or pumping, keep going, rest as much as you can, stay hydrated, and let someone else help with everything that doesn’t absolutely need to be done.
One thing I wish more moms prepared ahead of time is a little “sick-day pumping kit.” ![]()
Extra pump parts, storage bags, bottles, your charger, a cooler, easy snacks, and a big water bottle. Because when you’re sick, even washing pump parts can feel like a marathon. ![]()

And if you need medication, check with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about breastfeeding compatibility rather than assuming you need to stop nursing or pumping.
Most importantly, give yourself grace. You’re allowed to rest. You’re allowed to ask for help. You’re allowed to have a day where survival is the goal.
Sometimes breastfeeding support isn’t another feeding or pumping trick.
Sometimes it’s simply someone reminding you:
“Mama, take care of yourself, too. Your baby needs a healthy you.”
Coming from an ER Nurse and Mom of 3, this is one reminder I hope every breastfeeding and pumping mom hears before flu season hits. ![]()
