Don’t underestimate the power of a supportive partner.
When we brought our daughter home, we had just moved to a new city, and all of our family lived about two hours away. We didn’t have grandparents or relatives nearby to step in it was just the three of us learning as we went.
The first few weeks were incredibly hard. Breastfeeding didn’t go the way I had imagined, and pumping became our journey. There were moments I felt defeated and wondered if I could keep going.
That’s when my husband became my biggest support.
He took over the night shift whenever he could so I could focus on pumping and get a little extra rest. While I was pumping, he would feed and comfort our daughter, change her diaper, and rock her back to sleep. He constantly reminded me that resting wasn’t being lazy—it was taking care of myself so I could continue providing for our baby. On the days I felt like giving up, he never let me forget how proud he was of me and encouraged me to keep going one session at a time.
Looking back, I realized that my breastfeeding journey wasn’t just my journey … it was ours. His encouragement, patience, and willingness to step in made all the difference.
My advice to every new parent is this: Support the mom as much as you support the baby. A few extra minutes of sleep, a clean set of pump parts, a refill of water, or simple words of encouragement can mean more than you realize.
Sometimes your village is just the two of you and that can be more than enough when you’re carrying each other through the hard days.
