“Don’t always pump until empty.”

:baby_bottle:Don’t always pump until empty.
If you’re pumping just to relieve fullness, you don’t necessarily need to completely empty the breast. Pumping only until you feel comfortable can sometimes be a better approach than repeatedly pumping to “empty,” especially if you’re not trying to increase your supply.

I’m always trying to increase so always do a full pump. Good tip especially for engorged

Such a great tip! I did this when I was an over supplier. It definitely helped slow it down

That is so true! I pump for 5-10 minutes when I’m engorged for relief. Otherwise you end up with an oversupply. I made that mistake in the beginning, and it has taken me several months to get to the point where I’m not engorged all the time. Except now my daughter is slowly starting to wean herself, so every once in awhile I am getting engorged again

agreed! My lactation consultant said the same. With my first I saw everyone online trying to pump to empty to build a freezer stash, so I did the same my not thinking through whether I actually needed it, esp since i was a sahm. pumping too much and inefficient removal from either pump or baby led to clogged ducts, milk blebs, and just feelings of being trapped and tied down, anxiety from trying to fix the pain from clogs. not worth it this time around. now i just want to have enough for baby, not a ton, and to pump to replace a feed with a bottle a couple times a day. so much better 2nd time around. Just decide what is your goal with pumping - increase supply? build freezer stash? break from nursing due to cracked nipples? need more time for baby and you to get latch right? to try to get more sleep? or you just dont want to bf? do what fits with your personal goals.
