One thing I hope this support list doesn’t leave out is that formula supplementation DOES NOT equate to failure as a mother (I’ve said things like this in the past, but that’s because I need moms to understand this, so I’ll be a broken record until everyone knows). This needs to be on the list because, sometimes, we need a reminder that, as wonderful as it is to be able to supply your baby’s food all on your own, formula is there as a fall back when things inevitably go awry. Our bodies are amazing, but sometimes it takes more time than we’d like for our milk to come in. Or, maybe, our babies don’t latch for nursing like was hoped and the pumping setup isn’t ideal. Crap happens, and that’s OK momma. What’s important is that baby is fed and happy at the end of the day. I learned this the hard way when my LO wouldn’t latch reliably after the initial golden hour. Once we got home I had no colostrum, no milk-- nothing. It took hours of trying to breastfeed and only being met with cries of hunger and anger for me to realize that feeding her formula wouldnt be the end of the world (I was one of those people that was strongly against formula in any form at first)–it was in fact the best thing for her. She needed food and, unfortunately, I couldn’t provide it just yet. I was 4 days PP once my milk came in, and until then formula saved us and kept my baby happy and filled. And here we are now, 3 months almost, and my LO is healthy and happily breastmilk fed – still getting some formula here and there when she blows through any reserves
