What I wish I knew: Feeding

Something I wish I knew our first night home from the hospital is that the most important thing is that baby is fed and that it’s OK to give your breastfed baby formula when your body is lacking. When we came home from the hospital I was struggling to feed my LO. My milk hadn’t come in yet, she refused to latch and screamed when I tried, and I had no idea what I was doing with pumping. I was tired, she was hungry, and it wasnt a great time. In the middle of the night it took a good crying session from both parties before I realized we had some formula and that you can indeed feed a baby formula even if you want to breastfeed. So, we did. And it was OK. Because now, a month later, she’s latching and I’m pumping for her on a slight oversupply. But to get there we needed some formula for her to be fed (and for us to stay sane). And if you want to be exclusively pumping or BF, but you have to give some formula, know that’s OK – baby needs the nutrients and sometimes you won’t be able to give it with certain circumstances. You just have to roll with it. :sparkling_heart:

Yes, moms need guidance here. It’s so hard and I’m soo happy to hear your supply and latch are great now.

Those first few weeks are so tough great reminder that it’s okay to supplement when needed.

This! I think every mom should know it’s okay to supplement. It doesn’t mean you failed breastfeeding. You just need some help. Especially when your supply is coming in

This is so important! Fed is truly best. The pressure to breastfeed perfectly immediately is so intense, but supplementing for sanity makes a world of difference. So glad you two found your rhythm! :heart_hands:

Yes!! With my first i was 16, I tried to breastfeed and I couldn’t get her to latch right. Even when I asked multiple times for a LC to come in, they never had one come help. After day 1 of her not eating I basically begged them for formula and they just kept telling me to latch baby. By day 3 she still hasn’t latched correctly and she became shaky because she wasn’t getting anything, they made us stay an extra day accusing me of doing drugs. Whole time her sugar was low from not eating. I wish I would have brought some with me
