On the third day after my first baby was born, I developed mastitis without even knowing what it was. The pain was unbearable. My breasts became swollen, hard, and extremely painful, and I felt overwhelmed, scared, and exhausted while trying to care for my newborn. I remember crying because I didn’t understand what was happening.
What helped me was reaching out to my lactation consultant and doctor as soon as I realized something wasn’t right. Continuing to breastfeed and pump, using warm compresses before feeds, gentle breast massage, and getting proper treatment made a huge difference. Most importantly, I learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
To any new mom going through something similar: you’re not alone. Breastfeeding can be incredibly challenging in the beginning, but with the right support, it does get better.
